General Check-up

A routine procedure which should be performed by a general dentist every six months, it involves an examination of your teeth, gums and mouth. It is a thorough procedure which helps in the early detection and treatment of such things as tooth decay and gum disease.

The Dental Checkup: What to Expect

Your History

Your dentist will need to know your medical history if this is your first appointment. If not, your dentist will need to know any changes in your health such as new medications, pregnancy, etc.

Cleaning

This involves scraping off built up plaque and tartar that collects above and below the gum line before flossing between and around every tooth to remove any plaque or food particles that are clinging on.

Polishing

Now that your pearly whites are squeaky clean, they are polished to remove plaque and stains on the tooth surface.

Examination

Your dentist will look at any problem areas in your mouth using a metal probe with a small angled mirror.

Dental X-ray

Your dentist will consider your oral exam, dental history, and risk of developing cavities to decide whether to take x-ray pictures of your mouth.

Results and Recommendations

After the dental exam is complete, your dentist will let you know exactly what is going on in your mouth and, if any oral health problems were found, will make recommendations for the next best steps.
